How Londoners would spend their lottery win…

April 25, 2024

For those of us who’ve ever bought a lottery ticket, the sheer thought of all your numbers being drawn and securing the jackpot sends a surreal sense of excitement down the spine. Imagining what that tax free money could buy you, is a very pleasant thing.

And on that note, a recent survey of 1,000 nationally representative UK respondents aged over 25 conducted by a subscription lottery company caught our attention. It turns out that Londoners would be racing to put their hypothetical lottery win towards renovating their homes.

Which home improvements are a winner? Check out the results:

Dishing it out

Interestingly enough, older generations including Boomers and Late Gen X-ers are less fussed about luxury. In fact, 22% would use a lottery win to upgrade their kitchen which is a good choice, as this can be a costly project and you really want to get it right to ensure it lasts for many years to come. Our advice would be to opt for a timeless style that suits your home’s overall look and feel. For example, if your home is very traditional, a shaker-style kitchen could be a great option. It will allow you to change things up a bit through worktop, hardware and cabinet colour choices. Repainting your kitchen a few years down the line can give it that desired lift without forking out too much.

When you’re spoilt for choice, it can easily become overwhelming to plan your new kitchen but our blog ‘The kitchen renovation wish list’ is a great starting point full of kitchen design inspo.

Redecorating claims

Following on closely behind, 20% would choose to redecorate their home with that extra winning cash. We’d recommend that you start off by thinking about how your home needs to work for you and your family as well as the overall feel you’d like to achieve. Colour schemes and style choices can help create a lovely flow. Redecorating is a great opportunity to leave your comfort zone and go a bit bolder – after all you don’t want to create a copy of what you’ve had before.

Roll over, flooring!

Next up, 18% of those surveyed would hit the floor, not literally. They’d spend part of their winnings on updating their flooring. Our top tip is to keep the same flooring throughout your living space as different materials can easily divide areas within your home, especially when they’re open-plan, and make them look dated quickly. Sticking to a single flooring type creates a seamless, sleek look. If you’re looking for a very hard-wearing option with a long guarantee, Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) are ideal for busy family homes with furry friends.

Splashing it out on a bathroom

There’s not much of a gap between those hypothetical London Lottery winners wanting to renew their flooring with the 17% who would choose to refurbish their bathroom. Just like a kitchen, surely, you’d like your bathroom to stand the test of time too. It’s key to do your bathroom research properly in order to make informed style choices. At the moment chrome has taken a backseat, whereas black and brass hardware are increasingly popular. Trends come and go though. As a rule of thumb ‘timeless’ wins over ‘trends’ to ensure longevity and avoid the risk that your space feels outdated quickly. Pardon the pun, duck out of creating a ‘wet room feel’ by partially tiling your bathroom and simply paint the remaining walls. In time, you can always freshen things up by changing the colour of those painted areas.

Game on, garden

13% of Londoners would use their payout to dig into their garden or outdoor space. Just imagine a gorgeous seating area with plush cushions surrounded by lovely plants, a barbecue on the side, a relaxing water feature…the list goes on. Whatever your preferred way to spend time or relax within your own great outdoor space, we’ve collated plenty of ideas that may help you make the most of your ‘fifth room’ all year round.

Extension jackpot

Well, who couldn’t do with more space? 11% of Londoners, made up of Boomers and Gen X, would extend their home with a lottery win and that seems like a life-changing investment to us: think more space, reconfigured and transformed living spaces, greater comfort, flexibility, and enjoyment within your own home. There are lots of different extension types and at least as many ways to maximise the spatial potential of your home which we appreciate can be daunting. Cube’s handy extension explainer refrains from waffly jargon and explains the different extension types in a comprehensive way together with useful illustrations by our architects. And if you still feel this doesn’t extend your imagination, you can always chat to us in person.
