Spotlight on… a 4-storey house refurb
July 18, 2024
There’s nothing better than a delighted customer who appreciates our end-to-end services and returns to entrust us with another home improvement project. Well, that’s exactly what happened when our customer moved to a new home in Wandsworth and asked Cube to transform their large semi-detached 4-storey house into a stunning family home.
Our latest ‘Spotlight on’ blog delves deeper into the finer details of the project and explains how we answered and delivered their brief.

Semi-detached 4-storey family home in Wandsworth, South London
What renovation work was carried out?
- Basement to top floor refurbishment;
- Tanking of the lower ground floor;
- Updated plumbing and rewiring of upper floors;
- Creation of double-height entrance hall, cloakroom, kitchen/diner, additional four bedrooms, two family bathrooms and a master suite.
MAKING THE LOWER GROUND FLOOR WATERTIGHT
Cube instructed a specialist to tank the lower ground floor, a method used to prevent moisture from seeping through the floor and walls, making the basement watertight. We then laid down zoned underfloor heating, allowing our customer to heat specific areas of their house independently. Finally, we finished the floor with a layer of concrete. The old saying “green with envy” should definitely be changed to “blue with envy” when you look at this finished living room.
LOWER GROUND FLOOR QUIRK
Whether it’s to keep things organised, reduce clutter or maximise our living spaces, storage in a home is crucial. You can never have enough storage space and this uplifting corridor on the lower ground floor literally oozes storage, yet it’s so fun and aesthetically pleasing that you just want to walk this way.
OPENING UP THE GROUND FLOOR
We carefully took down a number of internal walls on the ground floor and installed complex steel beams to support the original structure of the house. Intricate work but so worth it as it enabled us to open up the space and accommodate an entrance hall with double-height, a useful cloakroom and a large kitchen/diner.
DOOR CHOICES
Fitting a mix of Crittall doors and double-height glazed doors around the house was another specialist job, requiring precise engineering to ensure the right structural support to handle heavy steel and glass components. The Crittall doors add a sleek, industrial aesthetic and help partition our customer’s kitchen/diner without compromising on natural light or space. Their thin, black steel frames offer a minimalist yet striking design, blending seamlessly with the rest of the interior.
COME ON IN…
Talking about making an entrance! By doubling the height of the entrance hall and fitting a large vertical window, we created a feature which looks equally beautiful when viewed from the lower ground and ground floors. With so much height gained, the copper pendants make for the perfect lighting choice and help brighten the space during the darker time of the year. The wooden staircase with its traditional banister contrasts elegantly with the contemporary Crittall glass doors. Soft, neutral wall paints highlight the natural light and round off a calming, welcoming space.
ENTRANCE HALL QUIRKS
Storage space for shoes and outerwear tends to be boring; not in in this family home though. Our customers found this pre-owned wooden cupboard on an online marketplace and here it is enjoying a new lease of life, nicely hiding the family’s coats & other garb. Not to mention the blue hues courtesy of wallpaper and paint choices which get an extra lift from the detailed dado rails and skirting boards.
UPPER FLOOR WORKS
The upper floors also received their fair share of TLC starting with the less visible, yet all-important, works like rewiring and updating the plumbing. Cube created an additional four bedrooms and two family bathrooms as well as a beautiful master suite which makes this remarkable refurbishment project complete.
We achieved a seamless transition from the master bedroom through to a contemporary dressing room. Beautiful parquet flooring, together with the boldly coloured freestanding bath, make a stunning centre piece.
Hues of blue on the walls and modern, built-in wardrobes nicely complement the classic original fireplace. Slip through the doors on the left and you’re into a very pretty en-suite with a shower for those days when there’s no time for a bath. Heaven!
