Add a final flourish to your property’s exterior

October 20, 2022

The world of home improvement projects never stops as there’s always something in or around the home that could do with an update, especially if you’ve lived in the same space for many years and don’t want to move.

Whilst many projects tend to focus on the interior, such as creating more space, reconfiguring layouts or refurbishing parts of the home, it’s always worth literally thinking ‘outside the box’.

By making internal changes that improve the look and feel of your property’s exterior at the same time, you’re onto something quite special. In this blog we’re exploring and explaining all you need to know about a discerning, delicate addition that’ll see the exterior of your home flourish: the Juliet balcony.

What is a Juliet balcony?

It’s essentially a false balcony consisting of a balustrade connection to the building facade but without a deck to walk on. Juliet balconies are commonly placed above windows and French doors. They get their name from the famous balcony scene in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, also are often referred to as a Balconette or French balcony.

What’s the difference between a balcony and a Juliet balcony?

Rather than a “walk on” balcony, Juliet balconies are more subtle and not designed to be sat or stood on. They aren’t wide enough to comfortably fit a person onto, although they still maintain the structural integrity of a balcony.

Unlike a balcony, a Juliet balcony acts more as a simple barrier placed outside of a full height French door on the first, or higher, storey of a home without leading onto a platform.

What are the key benefits of a Juliet balcony?

Aesthetically pleasing – every Juliet balcony is unique. You can choose from a number of designs and structures to compliment your home. Classic or modern, don’t be surprised if compliments from visitors or passers-by come in thick and fast.

Delightful light & views – your home can benefit from a great amount of additional natural light flowing in, making it appear brighter and more homely. Depending on where your Juliet balcony is positioned, it may also give you access to impressive views. Think fresh air streaming in whilst you’re enjoying the beautiful scenery from the comfort of your own home.

Durability factor – easy to install, yet capable of withstanding the most challenging environments. Toughened, laminated safety glass makes Juliet balconies impressively durable, and less likely to need any fixes in the future.

Safety first – you’ll be able to open your French doors or windows without having to worry about young children or pets as the Juliet balcony acts like a toughened, protective barrier.

What materials are used for a Juliet balcony?

This will depend on the property style, however glass and metal are amongst the most common options; sometimes wood or even stone are used. Clear glass, obscure glazing, glass balustrades, belly hammered spindles… the list of choices goes on and our Cube team is on hand to discuss which options bring the best out of your home.

Does a Juliet Balcony add value to my home?

Yes, it can! Added features usually increase the attractiveness of a property and can fuel additional interest when you’re looking to sell. Just think about how your home looks from the street: a Juliet Balcony can be a great way to lift the aesthetic appeal of your property’s exterior and open up potential to achieve a better valuation too.

Can I install a Juliet balcony in my period property?

You may be familiar with the red tape surrounding any potential visible alterations to your period property. This is where Juliet balconies slot in nicely: they’ll allow you to update your home without breaking any rules and their unobtrusive design means they’ll work well with a wide range of property styles.

Does a Juliet balcony require planning permission?

Generally, the answer is ‘no’ as Juliet balconies can be installed under Permitted Development Rights. However, it’s always a good idea to familiarise yourself with the guidelines to ensure your works are compliant as standard balconies are not covered by these rights.

Does Cube feature any Juliet balconies in its portfolio?

Yes, we have installed a number of stunning Juliet balconies and are particularly proud of this mansard loft conversion project in Strawberry Hill

Cube’s Marketing Manager Jane Henden recalls: “When our team visited this property to discuss the project, it quickly became apparent that the rear garden had to be part of the Juliet balcony feature. We decided to use slimline framed sliding doors together with a frameless balustrade across the entire width of what is now the master bedroom. The end result is stunning because our client can enjoy a space that’s flooded with light and looks out onto a backdrop of treetops. What’s also special is that you don’t see any fixings, everything is neatly hidden and you have a totally uninterrupted view. Our client can even have their own ‘007 moment’ when they lie in bed and let the blinds down, which are fitted inside the glazing, by the simple touch of a button.”
