Cube’s spotlight on… a feature extension in Twickenham

September 28, 2023

It’s always exciting to see home improvement projects that are carried out in someone else’s property, right?! We’ve created our ‘Spotlight on’ blog for that very reason, providing you with both insights and ideas as to what you could do with your home.

The second blog in our new series takes you through an extension and refurbishment project from our portfolio which we recently completed in Twickenham. Our client took advantage of our unique end-to-end service, allowing Cube to do what we do best: Design. Manage. Build. Here’s the story of our Twickenham transformation:

Property info

Semi-detached family home in scenic Twickenham, southwest London

What renovation work was carried out?

  • Comprehensive ground floor extension;
  • Layout reconfiguration throughout the space; and
  • Internal refurbishment for a wonderful finish.

ROARING REAR WINDOW

A pitched roof with skylights, gable windows and sliding doors – it’s always a key moment when the design vision of a build project comes to fruition, and we’re extremely pleased that our client was very happy with our delivery.

This configuration has been optimised to maximise the views out over the rear garden whilst visually complementing the existing character of the house. It’s a truly stunning feature that changes all the time, quietly interacting with sunshine, clouds, rain and everything else our British weather has to offer.

SLIDING DOORS TO THE SPATIAL RESCUE

We’d go so far as to say that every extension should be fitted with sliding doors and the reason presents itself right in front of you: less floor space is taken up by the doors as there’s no need for swing clearance, making the space more accessible. Additional natural light can stream through this seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors, creating a wonderful, harmonious flow.

The result: a spacious open-plan living/dining area with a bright, inviting look and feel, plus easy access to our client’s terrace. And let’s not forget, when we do have the odd hot UK spell of weather, there’s nothing better than airing the house and sliding doors are brilliant for that too.

Cube’s top tip: opt for slim-frame glazed doors to achieve the best visual link to your outdoor space.

LIGHT TRANSFORMATION

We think you shouldn’t have to compromise on enjoying natural light in your home. Most people tend to spend a lot of time indoors, in fact according to studies an astonishing 90% of our lives on average. Reason enough to design every space with light in mind. Roof windows were the perfect way to let more daylight into this home and keep our clients connected with the outdoor world. We decided to group four large Velux windows within the pitched roof to add plenty of light and also a sense of height to the extension. The combination of the feature rear window and Velux windows is what we call a ‘light match made in heaven’.

ONE-OF-A-KIND-KITCHEN

Installing a handmade and painted kitchen is a bit like being a child in a sweet shop: you can choose the materials, colours, finishes and features to create the kitchen that caters for your unique needs and looks just how you want it to look. Handmade craftsmanship and hand painted finishes can give your kitchen a very personal, timeless appeal that transcends passing trends. Our clients opted for a warm colour scheme, well-thought-out storage and integrated appliances which looks clean and maximises the space. Their handmade kitchen cabinets are built to last for many years and it’s easy to picture how the kitchen island will be the centre of fun gatherings with, well, easy access to some nicely chilled bottles.

NOT JUST ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL

Everything was ticking boxes for this newly built extension but we saw more scope to complement the bespoke handmade painted kitchen and add to the character of the space. The idea: a partially exposed brick wall.

We used slip bricks instead of building bricks. Slip bricks are thin slices of real brick that can be easily installed on any surface forgoing the hassle and cost of building an actual brick wall whilst still achieving the look of authentic brickwork. The wall has turned into a real feature within the extension and adds a lovely touch of cosiness which works its magic all year round. Not visible at all but wonderful to feel on a crisp winter day is the underfloor heating that we installed which runs throughout the extension’s floor.

PENDANT POINT OF INTEREST

Industrial-style interior design has become increasingly popular in recent years. You can see how introducing industrial pendant lighting has helped achieve a trendy, contemporary look in this open-plan space. Pendant lights add more than just a unique, stylish point of interest though, they’re also excellent for providing focused task lighting. Positioned as they are here, directly over the work surface of the kitchen island, you’ll be sure to have adequate light for your kitchen tasks. It’s little details like these that make all the difference.
