‘Tis the season to convert your loft
November 17, 2022
Dormer, hip-to-gable, L-shaped, mansard, Velux – there’s a plethora of exciting loft conversion options that’ll see you moving up instead of out of your home. Which type Cube recommends will depend on your property’s style, characteristics and a number of external factors.
Converting your loft can be far less disruptive to your living space than major extension works and it could increase the value of your home by as much as 20%. When it comes to deciding what time of the year to have your loft conversion completed, you might not naturally consider the winter months. As counterintuitive as it sounds, it can be precisely the right time to convert your loft and here’s why:
“Whilst we all love to moan about the British weather, it’s not a barrier for us here at Cube”, says Jane Henden, Marketing Manager at Cube. She adds: “We convert many lofts every year and if we stopped every time it rained, we’d never complete a project. There are a number of ways to lessen the effects of bad weather and Cube is well-equipped to work all year round.”
Sufficient sealing
You might fear that your energy bills will go through the roof if your loft is converted in the winter months – we hear you, but any loft conversion specialist should seal your home carefully prior to any exterior works. Although your home may feel slightly colder than usual, heat is kept inside.
Going under cover
No matter how miserable the weather, builders can work under cover, keeping your home protected from the elements. Thick polyurethane sheets tend to work really well for rear dormer or skylight loft conversions as only one side of the roof is removed.
Invest in a tin hat
During the winter months, you can also mitigate the effects of bad weather throughout your loft conversion project with a so called ‘tin hat’. It’s made of corrugated aluminium sheets which are mounted on top of the scaffolding above your roof to keep out rain, wind and snow.
Whilst most loft conversion specialists will charge extra for a tin hat, Cube includes these as standard within the price of any loft conversion project we carry out. Whether a tin hat is necessary will depend on your chosen type of loft conversion – we recommend them for front, back and gable rear dormers as well as rear and L-section loft conversions. It’s definitely a ‘hats off’ to the tin hat as they help protect against water damage and keep projects on track with completion timings.
Beat busy bookings
Another reason to choose the winter months for your loft conversion project is that it’s more likely you’ll be able to get a slot with your first choice supplier. Getting your project under way faster also means you can look forward to enjoying your new space over the warmer months to come!
Start saving sooner
Given one quarter of a home’s heat loss is due to a poorly insulated roof, chances are high that your loft conversion will have a positive impact on your energy consumption and bills. Adding insulation between the walls, floors and ceiling, traps heat inside and keeps out the cold. As less heat escapes from your home during the winter months, you no longer need to set the heating on full blast and can instead make substantial savings on your gas and electricity bills.
Savour summer
Enjoy your summer even more, dreaming of what your loft conversion might become: a gym, a home office, a guest bedroom or maybe your own private cinema? With a bit of planning you could find yourself enjoying your spatial addition way ahead of the warmer, sunshine months!
